Over the years as our children entered their teens dog showing had to take a back seat as our time was taken up supporting them in whatever hobbies they had decided upon..
We never lost our enthusiasm for Shih Tzu and showing. We still enjoyed the company
of our Dogs and had long telephone conversations with our doggy’ friends keeping
in touch with what was happening in and around the show ring.
. The children eventually
grew up, but by that time I was unable to travel around showing our dogs. We manage
a few shows but I realised I would not be able to show the dogs to the extent
we had in the past.
We had continued to support Northern Counties Shih Tzu Club and kept up our membership and in 2000 I was approached by a founder member of the Club who asked if I would be willing to act as Secretary for The Northern Counties Shih Tzu Club. I agreed to stand for election and was the Club Secretary until 2007. Eighteen months after I took over as Secretary we lost our Treasurer and I was once again approached and asked if I would take on this responsibility alongside the duties of Secretary. Being at home all day I felt able to cope with both jobs.

fun and things just snowballed from there. We soon had an extended family of Shih Tzu.We had caught the ‘showing’ bug, much of our spare time was then spent going around the show circuit in our camper van with our children and dogs. The children enjoying Junior Handling Classes at the shows. This taught them to be good losers and modest winners.

My name is Fay Buchanan and I moved from Lanarkshire, Scotland to Lancashire with my husband, Ian, and family in the late 70’s and. we bought our first Shih Tzu at the beginning of the 80’s. The Breeder asked if I had ever thought about showing, saying our puppy was a lovely example of the breed . It sounded great

I retired from the position of Secretary in August 2007 and from Treasurer in 2008 although both my husband and I remain active Committee Members and my husband acts as the Club’s Show Manager.
When planning a litter I try to breed for type and
temperament. My dogs are our pets who share
our home. They are used to the normal day to
day noises expected in the home and our
grandchildren are encouraged to play (gently) with our
puppies.

When they go to their new homes new owners are given a leaflet containing the pup’s diet, worming details, and some helpful tips.
They are also given the pups five generation pedigree, Kennel Club Registration and 4 weeks free insurance. New owners are told they can phone me about any worries or problems they may have with the pup. My support is here for the lifetime of the pup if needed. If, for any reason the new owner feels they can no longer cope with the puppy I ask they contact me.
